Clinical Services Planning

Regional role of the new hospital

Maitland Hospital works with community hospitals and district services across the Hunter Valley to meet local health needs. Maitland Hospital is linked with Kurri Kurri and Cessnock Hospitals to optimise existing capacity across medical, surgical and maternity services. As all Hunter New England Health (HNE Health) services work as a network, residents of Maitland and its surrounds also access hospitals and health services in Newcastle.

Planning for a new Maitland Hospital (NMH) began in 2011. The Service Statement reviews and builds on concepts and recommendations made in previous planning documentation. This document outlines the service requirements for NMH to effectively manage demand and activity now and in the future.

The NMH will provide the infrastructure required to respond to the anticipated growth in demand and enhance an integrated patient journey from acute, sub-acute and ambulatory care services to community based services in partnership with other health providers.

Planning for the future

NMH is being planned and designed to meet the needs of a growing community. This process is governed NSW Health planning guidelines.

Population, activity and projection data was used during the planning process of NMH to best cater for the needs of the community. Most recently, 2016 Population Projections from the Department of Planning and Environment (based on Estimated Resident Population from the 2011 Census) and 2016 Census data were used in a projection review. As new data becomes available, data will be reviewed and updated.

This project provides a great opportunity to embrace technology and innovation to create new ways of working, enhance efficiency and most importantly, deliver better health outcomes for our patients. New technology and cutting edge treatment methodologies are being considered in the design of the new hospital.

Existing Maitland Hospital site & Network of service information

The future of the existing Maitland Hospital site will be considered once the configuration of community health and other out-of-hospital services has been determined. Existing hospital services provided at Maitland Hospital will transfer to the new hospital once it is completed.

All services in the region operate as part of a cohesive network to provide patient care and this will continue.
