FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When will the new Maitland Hospital be opened?

We are on track to open in early 2022.

What services will be offered at the new Maitland Hospital?

The new Maitland Hospital will offer a broad range of services for the people of the Hunter, delivering more beds and treatment spaces than the existing hospital. Existing hospital services provided at Maitland Hospital will transfer to the new hospital once it is completed.
Further information about services can be found in the Service Statement HERE.

Is there scope for the hospital to be expanded in the future?

New Maitland Hospital is being planned and designed to meet the needs of a growing community. The site is 17.3 hectares and we’re only building on three hectares, so there is provision for additional building.

What will hospital access be like including traffic on Metford Road?

The New Maitland Hospital project team has worked closely with Roads and Maritime Services and Maitland City Council to study traffic flows and ensure adequate hospital access. We will continue to work with Roads and Maritime Services and Maitland City Council throughout the project implementation.

Will there be enough car parking?

Providing adequate car parking spaces for staff, patients and visitors at the new Maitland Hospital is a key priority for the project team.
To ensure parking supports the new Maitland Hospital operations, Health Infrastructure has been collaborating with GTA Consultants, Maitland City Council and Roads and Maritime Services to assess and ensure adequate car parking is provided for staff, patients and visitors from 2022 and into the future.

How will I get to the new Maitland Hospital if I don't have a car?

Ensuring the new Maitland Hospital is easily accessible to staff, patients and visitors is a key part of the planning process of the new hospital.

Can I take the bus to the new Maitland Hospital?

Hunter Valley buses will help to connect the local Maitland community with the new Maitland Hospital via bus routes 182, 183 and 189 servicing the local area. Bus route 189 travels down Metford Road, passing the new hospital site.

Can I take the train to the new Maitland Hospital?

Located two kilometres from the new hospital, Victoria Street Station in East Maitland will act as the hospital’s primary train station. Victoria Street station has a lift to allow for easy access for all. We are currently engaging with bus operators regarding a connecting route between Victoria Street Station and the new Maitland Hospital.

I am a contractor or sub-contractor wanting to work on the new Maitland Hospital build. How do I express my interest?

Multiplex Constructions, which are building the new hospital, encourages interested contractors, sub-contractors and providers to express their interest via the Industry Capability Network (ICN), HunterNet or Supply Nation.

Has the potential for flooding been considered at the site?

We are aware that Maitland and surrounds is prone to flash flooding and the site was selected with this in mind. The new Maitland Hospital site is not prone to flooding, but if it occurs access to the hospital can be available via the New England Highway. The issues that caused the flooding of Chelmsford Drive in April 2015 have been addressed. We will continue to work with Maitland City Council on these site components as the project progresses.

What are the plans for the existing Maitland Hospital?

There has been no decision made as yet on the future of the current Maitland Hospital site once it is no longer operational. Health Infrastructure will work with Maitland City Council and Property NSW to establish what will happen with the current Maitland site.
