Training & Education

The new Maitland Hospital will continue benefitting students and staff through the existing hospital's training program as an integral part of the comprehensive network of services and training delivered across Hunter New England Health. All teaching, training and education opportunities that are available at the current Maitland Hospital will continue at the new facility.

Maitland Hospital training:

  • The Maitland Clinical School was established at Maitland Hospital 40 years ago and provides training to medical students from the University of Newcastle.
  • Currently 50 students train with Maitland Hospital and over the next two years it is predicted this number will increase to 70 students.
  • Maitland Hospital provides teaching for doctors-in-training including a range of clinical rotations in emergency medicine, general medicine and surgery.
  • Nursing staff are supported to access specialist training, such as intensive care and emergency department nurses who are participating in post-graduate education in critical care.
  • A transition to practice nursing and midwifery program supports newly graduated staff to enter the workforce at Maitland Hospital and all facilities across the Lower Hunter Sector. This program is continuing to grow with 21 new graduate nursing and midwifery positions commencing in 2019.
  • All staff complete NSW Health mandatory training and education supported by the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI) and other key providers.
  • Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health students from various universities and TAFES undertake placements within Maitland Hospital and all facilities across the Lower Hunter Sector with collaborative agreement models in place to support student development and team involvement.
  • Each week interdisciplinary education is held within the education centre, an important teaching and training event at the heart of the integrated health service. All staff including hospital volunteers are invited to participate in the sharing of knowledge and expertise with patient stories and practice improvement a core focus area.
