Smoking Ceremony Cleanses site

A traditional Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony has been held at the Metford Road site for the new Maitland Hospital.

Aunty Marg of the Wonnarua people provided a Welcome to Country to the group which included the new Maitland Hospital Project Team, Maitland Hospital Staff, members of the community and students from the local Metford Public School and Hunter Valley Grammar school.

Sharing with the group, Aunty Marg talked about the opportunity the new hospital would provide for the community and reflected on the history of the existing Maitland Hospital where she was born.

All those in attendance placed eucalyptus leaves on the fire and watched the smoke travel across the site.  This cleansed the site of the past and blessed it for the future.
