Minister visits to view progress

NSW Minister for Health and MP Jenny Aitchison meet Darren Wright, Jimmy Whaleboat and Cain Waterman

Construction on the $470 million new Maitland Hospital is forging ahead to deliver world-leading health services to the Hunter community by early next year.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard visited the construction site just in time for National Reconciliation Week to see the project’s progress first-hand.

Mr Hazzard toured the emergency and outpatients departments, birthing suites, special care nursery, intensive care unit, operating theatres, renal and chemotherapy units, and the rooftop helipad, which has just completed testing by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter team.

“It is just fantastic to see the great progress on the new Maitland Hospital, which is on track to deliver world-class health care to the Hunter community from early next year,” Mr Hazzard said.

The hospital redevelopment has created almost 5,000 new jobs in total and is predominately staffed by local people.

It has also provided work for previously unemployed people through the Maitland Connectivity Centre, finding work for 58 previously unemployed people during this project.

It's a great example that more than a word, reconciliation takes action.
